The REAL Reason Your Pecs Won’t Grow

Unpacking the Mystery of Chest Gains

If you’ve ever wondered why your pecs refuse to grow despite your best efforts, fear not! We’re here to reveal the real reason behind this phenomenon so that you can finally achieve those chest gains you’ve been dreaming of.

Are You Even Bench Pressing?

One of the most effective exercises for building a big chest is the bench press. However, many people with underdeveloped chests tend to shy away from this movement due to various reasons such as fear, shoulder injuries, or even a lack of confidence. But here’s the truth: if you want to kickstart the growth of your pecs, you need to start bench pressing properly and safely.

Strength Matters

Now, let’s talk about strength. How much weight can you bench press? If it’s less than 1.25 times your bodyweight, then it’s a sign that you haven’t invested enough time and effort into this exercise. Consistency is key. So, if you haven’t been incorporating the bench press into your chest workouts regularly for at least a year and a half, it’s too early to determine if you’re truly a chest non-responder.

Beyond the Bench Press

While the bench press is a fantastic exercise, it’s not the only one that can help you achieve a bigger chest. You need to supplement your workouts with other chest exercises to fully engage and activate your chest muscles. Look for exercises that allow your chest to reach a complete contraction, such as the cable crossover. This exercise, when performed with proper form and focus on the mind-muscle connection, can effectively stimulate chest growth.

Genetics and Optimization

You may have heard people blaming their genetics for their underdeveloped pecs, but don’t be discouraged. Everyone has the potential to build a great-looking chest, regardless of genetics. While the length of your clavicles can play a role in determining the size of your pecs, it doesn’t mean you can’t achieve a substantial chest.

Optimizing chest development requires carefully selected exercises and techniques. Incorporate pause reps on dumbbell bench press and dips into your routine. These exercises target underdeveloped pecs and help offset dominant delts. Additionally, if you have access to a cable bench press, utilize it as an efficient way to build a bigger chest.

A Complete Workout Program

If you’re struggling to build your chest, don’t despair. There are comprehensive workout programs designed to help you achieve your chest goals. Head over to athleanx.com and use the program selector to find the perfect plan tailored to your specific needs.

Conclusion

Now that you know the real reason why your pecs won’t grow, it’s time to take action. Incorporate the bench press into your routine, work on building strength, and supplement your workouts with exercises that promote a complete contraction of the chest. Remember, genetics may play a role, but with the right exercises and techniques, you can overcome any limitations. So, get out there and start sculpting the chest you’ve always wanted!

A few years ago I broke my clavicle and dislocated my left shoulder in a car accident. Ever since, I have difficulty with building my chest. Regardless of what I try I feel like my shoulders are being over engaged. Any tips on what I can do to mitigate this so I can focus my efforts on the chest without over use of my shoulder?

My chest is coming along, although I still have that lose skin around the armpit areas that cause me to second guess my progress. I've heard to focus on filling with muscle hypertrophy because of the loss of fat in that area

I've been working out now for 7 months and I'm noticing my chest getting bigger BUT…the left side is getting bigger much more than the right side 😳😐. I'm right handed and notice the left side is weaker except for the chest which feels equally strong on both sides. I do both barbell bench press (inclined) and dumbell press, also inclined. I do cable flys also. I just don't understand why both pecs aren't equal 😕. Do I start doing more on the right side and less on the left, or what? I'm 60 now and remember this happening the last couple times, in my 20s and 40s, when I took up weightlifting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙂 Really strange 😕

So I need to ask. 20 something me used to lift VERY heavy weight (heavy as I could for 6 sets of 12). But now in my 40’s I’m doing lighter weights (4 sets of 25). Not sure which is best, still learning how my body will respond at this age . . . at 32 I was in the best shape of my life. But then kids and career got in the way, so I’m back in the gym after 10 years off.
