Pro Boxer Tries Calisthenics (HAND RIPS!)

Introduction

Imagine a professional boxer stepping into the world of calisthenics, where bodyweight movements and strength training take center stage. Well, thatโ€™s exactly what happened when Mateo Atalla, owner of Boxr Gym in Miami, partnered with Chris Heria to embark on a calisthenics journey. In this article, weโ€™ll delve into their experience, the challenges they faced, and the incredible results they achieved.

The Journey Begins

Chris Heria, a well-known calisthenics athlete, and Mateo Atalla, a seasoned pro boxer, joined forces to bring the best calisthenics bars to Miami. With the closing of Thenx Studios, the duo saw an opportunity to create a space that would cater to calisthenics enthusiasts from around the world. Their journey began with setting up the bars with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that they were ready to host the best calisthenic athletes.

A Day of Pull Workouts

To kickstart Mateoโ€™s calisthenics journey, Chris and Mateo decided to dive straight into a pull workout. Pull-ups, chin-ups, and various other exercises targeted their back, biceps, and overall upper body strength. However, it wasnโ€™t all smooth sailing. As a pro boxer, Mateo had never experienced the intensity and strain that calisthenics put on the hands. As a result, he encountered the dreaded hand rips โ€“ painful tears in the skin caused by excessive friction and grip strength. Despite the setback, Mateo persevered, demonstrating his determination and resilience.

The Benefits of Calisthenics

Calisthenics is often touted for its numerous benefits, and Mateo quickly realized why. By incorporating bodyweight movements into his training routine, he experienced increased overall strength, improved muscular endurance, and enhanced body control. Calisthenics also helped him develop greater core stability, which is crucial for maintaining balance and generating power in boxing.

The Importance of Grip Strength

One of the key lessons Mateo learned during his calisthenics journey was the importance of grip strength. Boxing relies heavily on hand and forearm strength, but calisthenics takes it to another level. The rigorous exercises challenge the grip and forearm muscles in ways boxing alone canโ€™t replicate. Mateoโ€™s hand rips served as a reminder of the significance of building grip strength, and he made it a priority moving forward.

Chris Heria: The Guide

Throughout Mateoโ€™s journey, Chris Heria served as his guide and trainer. With the HERIA Pro App, Mateo had Chris Heriaโ€™s personal follow-along workouts and programs in the palm of his hand. This allowed him to train alongside Chris, follow his routines, and receive valuable guidance. Having a professional like Chris as a mentor undoubtedly accelerated Mateoโ€™s progress and ensured he was on the right track.

The Results

After weeks of dedicated training and overcoming hand rips, Mateo began to see remarkable results. His upper body strength skyrocketed, and his core stability improved significantly. Additionally, his grip strength became formidable, enabling him to deliver powerful punches with increased accuracy and control. He even found that his calisthenics training had a positive impact on his boxing footwork, further enhancing his performance in the ring.

In Conclusion

The collaboration between Chris Heria and Mateo Atalla brought together the worlds of calisthenics and boxing, creating a truly unique experience. While hand rips and challenges were inevitable, Mateoโ€™s determination and the guidance of Chris Heria propelled him to new heights. His journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of calisthenics and the importance of adapting to new training methods. Who knows, maybe weโ€™ll see more professional boxers testing their skills in the world of calisthenics in the future.

So, if youโ€™re seeking a new and exciting way to challenge yourself physically and mentally, consider giving calisthenics a try. The journey may not always be smooth, but the rewards are undoubtedly worth it.

My hands ripped clean off doing pull ups. I was in shock and hesitated to pay attention to where they went. I looked up and they were still gripping the bar, but I had no hands left to grab my hands. All of a sudden two birds swooped down and snatched up my hands bro. Flew away. That was my last pull up.

This is so inspirational itโ€™s my first time seeing this channel and Iโ€™m already a fan of it, His body is soooo ideal and I love it so much not too bulky or too skinny, Iโ€™m really curious if this can be achieved by purely push ups and other exercises that doesnโ€™t require weights (like hitting the gym for bench press etc) really hope to know more

Hey I have one question because I cant find answer.. I've been donig calisthenics for over 4 month and I went from 0 pull up to 5 with good form but I am stuck on this 5.. What is better? To do 2 set of 5, then 1 set with thin band and finish with thicker band or to do overload? From thicker band to only my weights?
