Is Protein Powder a Worthless Expense?

Protein Powder is a Waste of Money (DUMB!)

Is Spending Money on Protein Powders Worth it?

Protein powder has become a staple in the fitness world, with many people believing that it is a necessary supplement for building muscle and reaching their fitness goals. But is it really worth the money? In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at whether protein powder is a waste of money or a valuable investment.

The Protein Requirements

Before we delve into the topic, let’s understand the protein requirements for the human body. The minimum recommended daily protein intake is about 0.3g per pound of bodyweight. However, if you’re actively working out and aiming to build muscle, you’ll need significantly more protein – ranging from 0.7g to 1.2g per pound of bodyweight. Protein plays a crucial role in repairing and growing muscles, making it an essential part of any fitness enthusiast’s diet.

Whole Foods vs. Protein Supplements

One argument against purchasing protein supplements is the cost. Some argue that getting protein from whole foods is cheaper and more effective. However, the prices of common protein sources, whether they are meat or vegan-friendly options, are comparable to protein supplements. Moreover, supplements offer convenience, allowing for a more consistent intake of protein. So, when looking at the value of protein sources, both whole foods and supplements come out relatively equal.

Calculating the Value

To determine the value of a protein source, you can use a simple formula. Divide the price of the protein by the number of servings and the number of grams of protein per serving. This will give you the price per gram of protein. You’ll find that most protein sources, including chicken, beef, salmon, peanut butter, tofu, and lentils, have similar prices per gram of protein. Additionally, not all non-meat choices are complete proteins, meaning they lack essential amino acids and require supplementation from other sources.

The Whey Protein Advantage

When it comes to whey protein, there’s a major bonus that is often overlooked. With just 29 grams of whey protein powder, you get 3 grams of leucine. Why is this important? Well, leucine is a vital amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth. Scientific research has shown that 3 grams of leucine is the threshold needed to activate the muscle-building process. Whey protein is not only able to meet this threshold effectively but also does so in a calorie-efficient manner.

Choosing the Right Protein Powder

It’s important to note that not all protein powders are created equal. When selecting a protein powder, check the label to ensure that the leading source of protein is not whey protein concentrate. This is an indicator of a lower-quality protein powder that should be avoided. Instead, look for premium brands like ATHLEAN-Rx that provide a high amount of protein per serving and quality ingredients.

In Conclusion

Protein powder is not a waste of money but rather a valuable tool for meeting your protein requirements and reaching your fitness goals. Whether you choose to get your protein from whole foods or supplements, the key is to ensure you’re obtaining enough protein to support muscle growth and repair. So, don’t dismiss protein powder as a useless expense but rather embrace it as a convenient and effective way to enhance your fitness journey.

Hi, can you please tell me the size of the amount protein powder you get in total in the bag of protein that you sell, 3kg? 5kg? It doesn't really say on the website how much you get or how big the tub is.

Honestly this is an odd argument to make. Meat has a tonne of other healthy benefits that protein powder doesn't. The real benefit of whey protein is that its high protein and low calories.

Okay so correct me if i am wrong, using your chart for the 180 pound guy who needs 100 some grams of protein and if he gets it no other way thats roughly 5 servings of yours correct? or any other brand? and yours also contains surculose and stevia leaf extract i dont know about you but i dont think our bodies where ever designed for chemically altered sugar, I would rather just have the sugar as its converted to glucose which your brain actually needs and so does your muscles come on out work guy, i like your vids but some stuff you just gotta know.

The only thing not being factored in here is my body’s perception of full after consuming a protein source. Everyone’s body is different so this is different for everyone. For me some protein shakes that have 25-30g per serving make me feel full and semi lethargic. A hamburger patty that has the same amount of protein doesn’t effect me in that way. I could literally sit down and eat 5 hamburger patties at once but it would take me an entire day to get down 5 protein shakes. So for me I’m willing to spend more money per gram of protein on hamburgers knowing I can more easily consume a lot in a day to reach my goal.

Ponds, ounces, cups and metric… America, just ditch that stupid system and fully adapt the metric! You’re already using it in a lot of cases. It would be sooooo much easier if you used just metric system!

Isn't the "food vs supplement" just a regulation and taxation thing? Depending on your country/state, supplements are less regulated than foods, and taxes may be different

Nobody has £50.00 odd for a month? I bet most of those people would be spending more than that one things which work against their training and body. It is all excuses. It is like a guy who can afford a box of cigarettes but makes the argument that he can't afford a lighter for himself to smoke. Protein shakes are not expensive.

Whey protein gives me liquid diarrhea every time so it's a complete waste for me. Isolate, grass fed, add fat, none of it works. However, pea protien makes me feel pretty good.

who is paying 5.20 for a dozen eggs? I know we had a shortage but recently I never have to pay more than 2.99 making eggs cheaper per gram of protein

Don't forget to add in the cost of shipping if you buy protein powder online. Can't just go with the advertised price. Total price of Jeff's protein powder shipped to my house is actually $67.53, which makes it $0.08 per serving, and that's with a $10 discount. Without the discount, it would be $0.092 per serving.

Do all flavors of AthlenX protein powder have sucralose? I see the frosted cinnamon does. I'm actually surprised because it's a bad artificial sweetener. This is even before the DNA damage report recently. I see stevia leaf extract, which is good.

Plant based protein mix is pretty awesome too. Wish he would've mentioned it. Whey concentrate is tough on the kidneys. Alternate whey with plant-based protein powder but make sure you get a good quality one without the buckets of chemicals added.

The cheapest source of protein is low-fat cottage cheese which costs only about 2.5 cents per gram of protein. You can easily turn it into a shake by adding milk or water and add some flave drops for taste. I would argue it is better than any cheap protein powder.

Protein powders are not meant to replace meals. They are just meant to be added on top of your daily diet. Very useful for hardgainers.

saying "protein powder" is a food insinuates that you can consume protein powder instead of food for it is essentially what the muscle needs which can lead people into doing so and that would result in kidney failure and many other issues, plz be careful with your word choice

He failed to mention with actual food, protein is only a small portion of what you're getting out of the same price you paid. So paying for protein powder is very inefficient cost wise.

What I've found through my own personal testing is that the only way to get visible results from protein powder is boofing. Just get a turkey baster ingest rectally.
